Communications Operator 1

Temporary Full-time

The Police Administration Department requires three (3) temporary full-time Communications Operator 1s for an approximate 1 year term, to work at the RCMP Detachment as a 911 call taker. 
 
You will answer 911 and non-emergency calls, often under stressful circumstances.  You will obtain and enter all critical and pertinent information from callers into police computer programs, determine and prioritize the caller’s needs, and route the information to the dispatcher, initiating an appropriate police response.  You will use CPIC, PRIME and CAD, monitor various radio channels, and operate and maintain communications equipment. 
 
You must have the following requirements:

  • Previous experience as a 911 call taker
  • Ability to type at a net speed of 40 wpm, and use computers/technology with ease
  • Ability to do shift work (12 hour shifts, both day and night shifts, and weekends/holidays)
  • Demonstrated work experience in a fast paced, multi-tasking environment

 
In addition to the above, you have working knowledge of the Criminal Code of Canada, Motor Vehicle Act and other applicable legislation, bylaws and regulations.  Sound judgment, combined with the ability to think clearly and quickly in emergency situations with accurate results is a necessity.  Strong interpersonal skills are also required along with demonstrated ability to take initiative, provide exceptional customer service, and contribute positively in a team environment.
 
You will be required to obtain and maintain an RCMP security clearance as a condition of ongoing employment. 
 
For temporary full-time positions of eight (8) months or longer, a City employee who is successful on the posting will have the right to revert to their former position.
 
Shortlisted candidates may be required to complete standardized tests or exercises to demonstrate their applicable skills and knowledge.
 
Salary:
$26.34 to $30.94 per hour
(Pay Grade 15 – January 2021 rates)
 
Hours of Work:
Shift Work – 24/7 operations (the OCC is staffed 24 hours/day, 7 days/week, 365 days/year)
