Main Purpose & Function 
Reporting to the Senior Geometric Designer and works closely with engineers, designers, landscape architects, and engagement professionals throughout Transportation; the Geometric Designer prepares geometric, sign and paint plans for the City of Vancouver’s transportation projects. The Geometric Designer will also undertake a variety of other planning and design, research, technical, and administrative duties in the Transportation Design Branch. The Designer is responsible for both creation of new simple to moderate designs and review of designs by other designers.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Prepares concepts and geometric drawings, sign plans, and paint plans using AutoCAD and AutoTURN.
  • Communicates with stakeholders, engineers and senior staff to develop designs according to design standards and engineering principles.
  • Undertakes relevant field observations to verify site conditions.
  • Supports the development and enhancement of City design guidelines, drafting standards and overall design consistency; may take on specific assignments related to the research and development of detailed design guidelines and/or standards.
  • Identifies data needs and performs moderately complex data analysis to support project decision making.
  • Organizes and support meetings with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Performs general administrative duties including data entry, taking meeting minutes, taking and organizing photos.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

  • Completion of Grade 12 supplemented with post-secondary education in Civil Engineering technology, transportation or other relevant area of study, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Sound knowledge of current transportation engineering design principles and methods.
  • Strong working knowledge and experience using AutoCAD for transportation drafting and design.
  • Ability to solve complex street geometric problems.
  • Ability to read and interpret complex engineering plans and specifications.
  • Ability to work with relevant design guidelines, including TAC Geometric Design Guide for Canadian Roads, Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices, NACTO Urban Bikeway Design Guide, and other international guides.
  • An understanding of the components of urban street design, an awareness of concepts such as Complete Streets, and an ability to apply related principles to visioning exercises or conceptual designs.
  • Working knowledge and experience using Adobe Creative Suite and GIS software (MapInfo and/or ArcGIS) would be an asset.
  • Working knowledge of the City of Vancouver Transportation policy, community planning processes and land use policy would be an asset.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills including confidently interacting with the public through phone, email and in person.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral instructions.
  • Ability to read and interpret rezoning and development policies and by-laws.
  • Demonstrated skill in establishing and maintaining good working relationships with internal and external stakeholder groups/partners, complemented by strong interpersonal skills to deal tactfully with staff, partner agencies, and the public.
  • Ability to prepare technical presentations and reports on complex technical, policy and planning issues.
  • Proven ability to work independently to produce quality materials and recommendations within tight timeframes.
  • Demonstrated research, mapping and analysis skills.
  • Proven ability to exercise sound judgment and discretion.
  • Ability to work well in a team environment, with little or no supervision, under tight deadlines, and sometimes outdoors in inclement weather.

Where operationally appropriate and subject to change, the City of Vancouver has a Flexible Work Program. This program allows staff to work remotely 1 – 4 days a week from locations that are a daily commutable distance from their work at a City worksite.  At this time this position is eligible to be part of the Flexible Work Program.

The City’s COVID-19 vaccination policy is currently suspended and as a result, vaccination against COVID-19 is not required at this time. However, should circumstances change and the City deem it necessary to re-introduce such policy, you may be required to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 in order to be eligible to continue performing your duties.
