The District of Saanich has been a climate action leader for many years. In 2019 the District declared a climate emergency, shortly followed by the approval of an ambitious and award-winning Climate Plan. The Sustainability Division leads this work and we have spent the last four years actively and collaboratively implementing the Plan and monitoring progress. We now have an exciting opportunity available for a permanent, full-time Senior Sustainability Planner. This position will identify, design and lead key projects, policies and programs that deliver on the Climate Plan vision and targets focussed on zero waste, consumption and embodied emissions.
A key objective of this position is to develop and implement a Zero Waste Strategy and associated targets and timelines for the Saanich community, building upon the foundational work already underway in the region and global best practice. This will include the design, implementation and monitoring of innovative approaches to manage consumption, develop and support a circular economy, divert waste, and minimize embodied emissions; all with the application of an equity lens. The position will hire and manage consultants, establish and manage project teams, develop and manage budgets, and secure grants to support this work. Depending upon the experience of the successful candidate and team workload, broader community-wide climate action projects/programs could also be included in this position’s role.
This position will work collaboratively with a wide range of fantastic internal and external stakeholders, providing analysis, technical expertise, advice and guidance to Council, senior staff, municipal departments, community groups and the public. You would be joining an incredible, passionate and highly successful sustainability team with access to strong, well-established regional, provincial and national networks.
